Hello! My name is Laiken (she/her).
I am a writer, editor, and self-proclaimed professional media connoisseur based in Brooklyn, NY.
Who am I?
That’s a secret I’ll never tell.
Just kidding. I’m a current Trending News editor at the Daily Dot and a freelance culture writer. I recently moved to Brooklyn, New York from Austin, Texas, where I regularly contributed to local alt-weekly the Austin Chronicle. In late 2021, I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Journalism and minor in American Studies. I’m Edmonton, AB-born and Houston, TX-raised. There’s cow manure and fossil fuels in this Canadian-American’s veins.
As a big sponge of culture, I absorb things at every turn—which also makes me a great listener. A non-exhaustive list of things I love include: finding links between pop culture and history trends, Moonstruck (1988), Fiona Apple, Martin Scorsese, research papers, Jackie Brown (1997), and disco music.

While at university, I served as editor-in-chief at Afterglow, UT-Austin’s own student-run music publication. I also interned at the Daily Dot, where I covered online culture, social justice, and labor rights, and both the Austin Chronicle and Austin Monthly, where I covered events, arts, culture, and music. In addition to my own writing, I helped other students with their coursework as a journalism writing coach for the Moody Writing Support Program.
I also hosted a radio show called time soup on KVRX 91.7 FM, where I curated a chaotic gumbo of tunes that reflect my ever-fading perception of time.
